Life is a series of highs and lows, of mountaintop victories and valley struggles. And sometimes, if we’re being honest, it feels like the valleys never end. Maybe you’re feeling stuck in one now. The storm is raging and relentless, and you don’t know if you can hold on much longer.
Here’s the good news: You don’t have to walk through your storm alone. Jesus walked through storms, and He’ll walk with you through yours.
Jesus Knows Storms More Than You Realize
The Bible gives us a striking image of Jesus in a literal storm. Matthew 14:22–33 recounts the time when Jesus walked on water toward His disciples who were battling fierce waves in the middle of the sea. Exhausted and terrified, they cried out in fear, only to hear His calming voice say, “Take heart; it is I. Don’t be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27)
But pause for a moment. Jesus wasn’t just some spectator to the storm. He was in the storm, navigating those same waves they feared. His presence changed everything.
This story is our assurance that no matter how rough the waters get, Jesus is present in our storms, too.
You’re Not Alone in the Storm
Isaiah 43:2 offers a comforting promise from God for those struggling through life’s chaos:
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you."
Notice the scripture says when you pass through—not if. God doesn’t sugarcoat the reality that storms come. But He reassures us that we won’t face them alone.
I remember a season in my life when I was drowning in doubt and stress. It felt like the waves of anxiety were crashing over my head. Prayer wasn’t an option; it felt more like a desperate cry for help. And then came a moment of peace, small and subtle. A scripture I had read weeks earlier came to mind, “The Lord is my refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). That truth anchored me, and I slowly began to find strength—not because my circumstances changed overnight, but because I wasn’t walking through them alone.
The Peace Jesus Promises is Greater Than the Storm
One of Jesus’ most comforting reminders is found in John 16:33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Jesus doesn’t minimize our struggles or dismiss how overwhelming they feel. Instead, He acknowledges the reality of trouble in the world. But He calls us to lift our eyes to Him, reminding us of His victory over it all.
This doesn’t mean life’s storms will suddenly vanish. But it does mean we can have unshakable peace, knowing the One who calms the storms is right there with us.
Lessons from the Storm
Here are three truths we can draw from how Jesus walks with us through the storms of life:
1. Jesus Will Get in the Boat with You
Just as Jesus stepped into the disciples’ boat after walking across the waves, He steps into the mess and chaos of our lives. He doesn’t watch from a distance; He’s in it with us.
2. Faith is Strengthened in the Storm
Like Peter, who stepped out of the boat to walk on the water toward Jesus, our faith often grows in the moments when we trust God despite the winds and waves. Even when we falter, like Peter, Jesus is right there to pull us up.
3. God’s Presence is Greater Than Your Fear
The disciples’ fear shifted to awe when they realized Jesus’ power over the storm. When we focus on His presence instead of the problem, fear loses its grip.
Seeing the Bigger Picture
Looking back at the hardest moments in my life, I now see how those storms shaped me. They stretched my faith, deepened my trust, and reminded me of just how faithful God is.
Think about the people around you. How many lives could you impact by showing them how Jesus walks with you through tough times? Sometimes, your storm can become someone else’s lighthouse, pointing them to the hope and peace found in Christ.
Take Heart
Whatever storm you’re walking through, hold onto this truth today: Jesus isn’t just aware of your struggles; He’s walking through them with you, calming your fears and strengthening your faith.
And when you feel overwhelmed, just like the disciples did, lean into His promise from Matthew 14:27, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
If you’re finding it hard to see Jesus in the storm right now, take a moment to pray. Reflect on one (or all) of these scriptures and invite Him into your circumstances. He’s already there, waiting to remind you that you’re not alone.
You don’t have to face the storm alone. Jesus walked in storms, and He’ll walk with you through yours. Take heart.
